1. Casino Niagara
Casino Niagara is a casino complex located in Niagara Falls, Ontario. It forms part of the Canadian side of the Niagara Falls tourist area. The building was constructed by the New York State Gaming Commission to compete with Casino Windsor (located on the Canadian side), which had built a significant new expansion since 1999. Opened in 1996, Casino Niagara has over 1,300 slot machines and 40 gaming tables.
It is one of Canada’s busiest casinos, attracting over 13 million visitors annually. The casino complex also includes conference facilities, a 349-seat theatre and a 2,500-seat music venue. Casino Niagara is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Visitors must be at least 19 years of age (or 18 on Fridays and Saturdays) to enter the casino.
The casino is located on the first floor of the Niagara Fallsview Casino Resort. The resort also features a 3,000-room hotel, restaurants, shopping and a 4,500-seat entertainment venue. The complex is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
In December 2005, the Niagara Fallsview Casino Resort received the Five Diamond Award from the American Automobile Association (AAA). It is the first time a casino in Canada has received this award.
The AAA Five Diamond Award is given to hotels and resorts that meet the AAA’s strictest criteria for quality and luxury. Fewer than 1% of all hotels and resorts across North America receive the Five Diamond Award.
The Niagara Fallsview Casino Resort is owned and operated by Niagara Casinos, an Ontario government agency. The casino is located on land leased from the Niagara Parks Commission.
The Fallsview casino was designed by WZMH Architects and built by PCL Constructors Canada Inc. at $1 billion. It opened on June 10, 2004.
The resort is served by the Fallsview Casino Resort Bus Terminal, which offers direct coach service to various locations in Southern Ontario.
Some have criticized the casino for its location on the Clifton Hill tourist strip. Critics say that the casino takes advantage of tourists and does not benefit the local community.
The casino has also been criticized for its ties to the tobacco industry. In 2003, the casino was named one of the top 10 destinations in North America for smoking by Cigar Aficionado magazine.
In 2015, the casino was ranked as one of the worst in Canada for its facial recognition technology to track visitors.
